The Prayer Room Drummer is a short documentary directed by Eric Volz, exploring the intersection of musicianship, prayer, and spiritual attentiveness inside a 24/7 worship environment in Kansas City.
The film follows Richard Town, a drummer who spent fourteen years playing in the prayer room. In this unusual setting, the drummer's role is not centered on performance or individual expression, but on listening, responding to the singers, musicians, and voices of prayer unfolding around him.
Through intimate observation and reflection, Richard describes learning to use rhythm as a form of spiritual sensitivity: supporting rather than leading, and becoming an extension of what is happening in the room.
He also reflects on the emotional and spiritual dimensions of the experience, the sense of strength, sorrow, presence, and what he describes as a state of “peace with anticipation.”
